N\u00e5r et atom enten mister eller f\u00e5r valenselektroner, dannes ioner: Atomer, der mister elektroner, bliver positive kationer, mens atomer, der optager elektroner, bliver negative anioner. Denne proces sker for at opn\u00e5 en stabil elektronkonfiguration, ofte med otte elektroner i yderste skal.
